THE LAND BENEATH THE LAKE
By Chris Perdue
Bryan’s bald little head bounced,
as he cast his fishing pole into the water.
His father gave a false smile trying to capture his son’s image,
soon the boy would be gone just like his mother.
The chemotherapy had taken it’s toll,
robbing the boy of his strength and hair.
The injected torture had all been for nothing,
a bitter truth for a twelve year old boy, life wasn’t fair.
Jon tried to lock this memory to his mind,
fearing this happy moment could be their last.
It would only be days, maybe weeks now,
for his son was fading fast.
Bryan looked down at a rippling in the water,
as a rainbow of beautiful colors began to appear.
He placed his fingertips upon the water,
and then he disappeared.
Jon ran to the spot his boy had just vanished,
and he too pressed his hand into the swirling colors.
As had happened a moment before, he disappeared too,
the lake captured another.
Jonathan felt his body speeding for the bottom,
and as it reached the lakes floor.
He passed through the imaginary ground,
hurling through a bright tunnel and then a door.
He landed on a beach of blue sand,
and turned around to see a city of colorful crystal.
Yet he was truly amazed when he saw his son,
with a full head of hair looking well.
A tall important looking man said,
“Welcome to the world of Miladore.”
A land where illness and death do not exist,
a place where your son will feel pain no more.
A tear formed in Jonathan’s eye as he asked,
“Are you saying my son will not die?”
The king placed his hand upon Jon’s shoulder and said, “Yes”,
to which Jon fell into the man’s arms and cried.
The king smiled and said, “It is the love for your boy,
not a stroke of fate, that brought you here.”
The love of you and your son, echoing across the water,
made the decision for us clear.
This world like love is magical,
we only accept the truest and purest of hearts.
Sadly I must say there is a price to pay,
you both may never depart.
Jon hugged his son and said,” That’s okay.
My son is all I need.
Without him above, life is just not worth living.
No happiness there would I see.
The police could not explain what they would never understand,
the facts behind the man and boy’s disappearance.
Even if they’d have seen it they would not have believed,
yet the boy had been spared a death sentence.
If your hurting, if your sick, if your soul is pure,
and you share a bond of love the world cannot break.
Maybe, just maybe, if your lucky enough,
you might find the land beneath the lake.
