Originally from Darwin Australia but now a permanent resident of Montreal Canada (legally :-))
Was a mechanic for 25 years in a past life. Part of my job involved designing, making, and fitting hand controls and adapting vehicles to suit people with various disabilities. However I now work full time online.
Created the Disabled World web site which was launched in May 2004 to provide an international online community for people with disabilities.
Disabled World, one of the very first online communities for persons with disabilities, is run from a home basement near Montreal Canada.
From site design, script coding, to article research, Disabled World is run entirely by 2 people committed to assisting seniors and people with disabilities.
With over 54 million people classified as disabled in the USA alone (The Census Bureau), Disabled World owners Lynn & Ian Langtree, a husband and wife team, saw the need to provide people with disabilities a website where the disabled of all ages and from all walks of life could unite on common ground completely free from membership fees and charges, share experiences, information and provide tips of assistance to the newly and life long disabled.
Disabled-World.Com is an interactive website with subject areas covering seniors and disability news, assistive device reviews, and articles on everything from helpful tips to sports articles.
Articles posted by members from around the world range from sad to the witty and entertaining, such as travel adventures, and the frustrating and sometimes humorous side of traveling with a disability.
Disabled World believes in the Social Model of Disability, a belief developed by disabled people in the 1970's, the social model changes the focus away from people's impairments and towards removing the barriers that disabled people face in every day life.
A free disability social networking community, discussion forum, along with a free disability dating service and disability chat rooms, allow people with disabilities from around the world a chance to communicate and get to know each other.
Should a member be looking for a place to buy, sell, or trade disabled equipment a classified ad service is available on site. Employers or people with disabilities seeking employment will also find a relevant ad category to submit their respective details.
