What is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia comes from the word "fibrosis" meaning formation of scar tissue. It is a chronic syndrome. It is commonly called as Fibromyalgia, or FMS. It is characterized by musculoskeletal pain, generalized fatigue and a feeling of being tired after sleeping.

The Symptoms Of Fibromyalgia

By fibromyalgia there are tender points in muscles, tendons and ligaments around the body. The points are especially common around the joints. Tender areas in the mid parts of the muscles are fewer and with lighter pain. The points give a constant aching and a sharper pain by pressure. However, muscular work and exercise do not necessarily increase the pain. When the muscles are warmed up and exercised, the pain may disappear or decrease for some time.

Current list of Drugs Associated with Fibromyalgia

Apologies for being gone so long_but cold winters are a natural enemy for FMS and related factors and symptoms

I would like to add that the pain symptoms are for many much more severe than commonly written. lets add; stabbing, intense spasms everywhere, with hot shooting 'knife life' blows, chest pains that feel like you are having a heart attack, miserable headaches, twitching, involuntary movement anywhere in the body, hips that do not necessarily function properly when pain is severe, dizzyness, shakiness, allergy problems, neck problems, and back issues that relate to the whole. The list is endless.

I am quite disgusted at the "commercials" on TV and discussions that 'make light' of the symptoms of FMS and know little of the suffering endured by the hands of Doctors; and wrong methods of treatment.

Perhaps the misunderstandings come; because the writers do not have it; or, have a very mild case that has not progressed to a greater degree. Yes I said; "Progressed"!!  Doctors are finding out what we; who really have this disease, have known for many years, Fibromyalgia is progressive.

So many people mistakenly think they have the disease; as someone either gave them an improper diagnosis, (as the disease mimics, so many other similar complaints) or they read  about the symptoms and think they have it. We who truly have it; the real FMS; do find a struggle taking place, that is more intolerable as the days go by. What was once an occasional "flare" becomes a weekly or daily nightmare of intense pain that totally incompacitates the individual. There is nothing like it; as you never can escape the hellish pain; even when there is no 'flare' going on.

I have had three children, some of which involved  long labors; but advanced Fibromyalgia is far worse, than any birth of a child, and obviously an ongoing battle of daily and nightly survival attempts.

'Staying positive' and having a strong mental attitude; may help some in the early years of this disease, but the day comes for the real FMS patients; that those attempts with "head games" no longer fit the mode.

I guarantee you that whoever found a "quick cure" for their "FMS" did not have it to start with.

It is so hard for me to tell if I should even consider whether or not I have Fibromyalgia or not. Osteoarthritis seems to have many of the same symptoms! Achy muscles and joints, fatigue, tingling around those same joints and muscles...

I don't even know if I should ask my doctor about, they might spring up with a diagnosis and add another disability to my repetoire when it might be the osteoarthritis! What a dilemma.

Tom.
